Structural study of growth orientation and defects
The real structure and morphology of piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films as essential components of magnetoelectric sensors are investigated via advanced transmission electron microscopy methods. State of the art electron diffraction techniques including precession electron diffraction and automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) indicate a columnar growth of the AlN grains We report a systematic theoretical study on the growth pattern and electronic properties of Zn 12 O 12-assembled material using density-functional theory within a generalized gradient approximation. Our results show that assembly can form by attaching a Zn 12 O 12 cage on a hexagonal site. A Zn 12 O 12 cage should combine with eight hexagons in adjacent eight Zn 12 O 12 cages respectively
